Audi to Develop Three New Electric Vehicles by 2020

Audi is making electrification a priority

At the annual Audi press conference, Audi AG Chairman Rupert Stadler announced that the automaker is planning to develop three new electric vehicles by the end of the decade. He also revealed that Audi is looking into the widespread use of electrification for many current models.

Expect a midsize, a premium compact, and more

The trio of electric vehicles will definitely include the Audi Q6 e-tron quattro®. The midsize Audi EV was first seen at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show. At the time, it was called the Audi quattro® Concept (pictured). In addition, Stadler mentioned that a premium compact car based on the VW Modular Electric Drive platform will arrive in 2020. Starting in 2021, Audi plans to electrify at least one vehicle in each of its core series by the year 2025.

Other Audi models on the horizon

EVs aren’t the only Audi models being buzzed about. Look for the 2018 Audi A8 flagship to be accompanied by the next versions of the Audi A5 Coupe and Audi Q5 compact SUV. Also in the works for 2018 is a new crossover-coupe design for the Audi A7. For 2019, expect a new Audi Q4. The next version will likely draw from the Audi TT Offroad Concept introduced at the Beijing Auto Show in 2014.

Self-driving technology speeding up

Through its new Autonomous Intelligent Driving GmbH subsidiary, Audi is focusing its attention on self-driving cars, working on a system that concentrates primarily on cities and urban environments. The automaker is open to industry partners and plans to share the technology with other automakers.

The future looks bright for Audi, and we at Audi Cary look forward to these upcoming Audi models as much as you do.
